English as a New Language (ENL) Program – Grades 4–12 at MSS, IMS, and IHS

We are proud to support multilingual learners through the English as a New Language (ENL) program. This program is designed for students whose first language is not English and who need support in building their English skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing.

    What is ENL?
ENL (formerly known as ESL) helps students learn English so they can succeed in all subject areas. The program follows New York State Part 154 regulations, which ensure that English Language Learners (ELLs) receive high-quality instruction in English and support in their academic classes.

    Who is the program for?
Students in grades 4 through 12 who are identified as English Language Learners through a state-approved process are eligible for the ENL program.

How does the ENL program work?
Certified ENL teachers work with students either in small groups or in the regular classroom.

Instruction focuses on both English language development and academic content (like math, science, and social studies).

    Students may receive:

Stand-alone ENL instruction, where they focus only on learning English.

Integrated ENL instruction, where the ENL teacher is dually certified and/or works with the classroom teacher to help students learn both English and subject content at the same time.

How long do students stay in ENL?
Students stay in the program until they reach proficiency in English, as measured by the annual NYSESLAT test (New York State English as a Second Language Achievement Test).

As students progress, the amount of ENL support may decrease, but they continue to receive help until they are ready to participate fully in all-English classrooms.

    Our Goal
We want every multilingual learner to feel confident, supported, and successful, both in learning English and in their academic journey.
